Compressor Oil Storage Containment

A secondary oil-containment rehabilitation at an industrial facility in Illinois. Phoenix prepared and lined ~7,800 sq ft of concrete and metal around live compressor-oil storage tanks with a seamless PHX6700 Polyurea system — a monolithic, chemically resistant barrier engineered to keep an oil spill inside the containment area.

The Project

What we installed

Primer & Base Coat

Two coats of Sherwin-Williams Dura-Plate 235 at 4–6 mils dry-film per coat — roughly 8–12 mils combined — laid down over the prepared concrete and metal to bond the system to the substrate and prime it for the polyurea lining.

PHX6700 Polyurea Lining

A plural-component, spray-applied elastomeric polyurea built up to 60–80 mils in controlled, overlapping passes across horizontal and vertical surfaces. The result is a seamless, monolithic, chemically resistant membrane over the entire containment area.

Concrete & Metal Substrates

The lining was installed over both concrete and designated metal — floors, containment walls, curbs, equipment supports, and related metal components — so the protective barrier is continuous across every material in the containment footprint.

Every Detail Sealed

Corners, transitions, tank bases, supports, and penetrations are where containment linings fail. Film build was maintained through all of them so there's no thin spot, seam, or cold joint for oil to work through.

Surface Preparation

Concrete moisture testing, abrasive sandblasting, pressure washing, and contaminant removal across concrete and metal before any coating went down. The slab passed moisture evaluation, so no separate moisture-mitigation coat was required.

Outcome

A continuous, seamless secondary-containment lining engineered to resist oil exposure, spills, moisture, abrasion, and industrial service — protecting the ground beneath a live compressor-oil tank farm.

This wasn't an empty room. The containment area stayed operational — full compressor-oil tanks, live piping, and equipment in place — while we worked around and between all of it.
